VERMA

Food waste has a significant impact on the environment and makes of majority of the municipal solid waste. Most of what ends up in a landfill could be composted and broken down naturally.

VERMA is a compost system designed for apartment residents with limited space, but want to make a difference in their amount of waste. It is a four tier system that utilizes different species of worms, a method also known as ‘vermicomposting’ - hence the name.

How it works

Step 1: Create your bedding in the tier 3 by adding a layer of brown matter aka shredded newspaper, cardboard or dried leaves. Moisten the brown matter until it feels like damp sponge. Then add a layer of soil and worms!

Step 2: Start slowly adding food scraps, allowing the worms to warm up to their new environment and feeding. Cover scraps with a layer of bedding each time after adding more scraps.

Step 3: Once tier 3 is full, repeat steps 1 and 2 in the second tier. The worms will migrate from tier 3 to tier 2 and begin eating food scraps from the active tier.

Step 4: Harvest nutrient dense soil aka “black gold” from tier 3 to use in house plants or garden, then check tier 4 for water or “worm tea” and water your plants with the nutrient dense organic fertilizer.

Step 5: Rotate tiers 1, 2 and 3 and start again!
