The Tate

The Tate is a dual functioning decor piece acting as both a bookend and a bluetooth speaker. It is organic in its form and inspired by the song ‘Always All Ways’ by the electronic music producer Pretty Lights.

Pretty Lights is known for his signature blend of organic and electronic sounds and his smooth transitions to create a sense of movement and depth. The track builds gradually, as does the form of the Tate.

I began by listening to the song and intuitively drew what I was hearing. The shapes were curvy, organic, and free flowing and from the thumbnails I selected the final form.

After modeling the form, I 3D printed it to see and feel if the size was right. From there I designed how the speaker components would fit inside and how the user would access them.

I then milled a prototype in foam to check the components would fit correctly, and after a few minor adjustments it was ready to be milled in the final material.

I chose Cypress wood due to its beautiful grain pattern and color, as well as its relatively high density. It was important that the speaker had some weight so it could perform its other task - holding books.

The user has access to the battery pack and power switch through the lid on the back. There is no fasteners necessary, instead I included a rabbet to allow for a secure closure.
